In which case, do you have them in parallel and 'in phase'?
Black to Green and Black/White to Green/White.

Can a short between the speaker binding posts and chassis or RCA and chassis cause an overloading of the PT?

What is the DC resistance of the transformer primaries and secondaries now with every thing unconnected. It can give you some idea where the failure was. And you would want to fix it before putting a new one in.

Speaker connections shorted, unlikely to burn the power transformer. RCAs shorted, will not harm anything - that's how the volume pot works.

Yes, wired that way is 'in phase' and correct for 120 volt mains.
