Live in Philadelphia. Using a 240/120V PT. The primaries need to be wired parallel for 120V (Edcor XPWR136).

In which case, do you have them in parallel and 'in phase'?
Black to Green and Black/White to Green/White.

Can a short between the speaker binding posts and chassis or RCA and chassis cause an overloading of the PT?
Speaker connections shorted, unlikely to burn the power transformer. RCAs shorted, will not harm anything - that's how the volume pot works.

I wired them as described in the schematics, striped wires together, "full" wires together. Does that also mean that they are in phase?
Yes, wired that way is 'in phase' and correct for 120 volt mains.
