Hi all
Been away for a while....
I'm going to build a small preamp based on the dismante pcbs I have. i have a couple of questions.
I have a 100K alps pot..
1. Do I use this pre or post the dismante circuit?
2. What sort of values do I use for a gain of 12-15dB? Do I use 1K and 10K or use a much small value such as 200ohms instead of the 1K and similarly for the 10K? I've seen some preamps with gain resistors 10K and 100K... what difference does it make?
3. Do I place a resistor in series with the input cap as I have seen this done?
Thanks
Rob

Putting the volume control ahead of the any amp improves the dynamic range as well as the noise and distortion.
Putting it behind the amp you run the risk that it could be over driven and all you do is attenuating an already distorted signal.
