They're back -- same recipe sans bakers union. I think that Teamsters still do the routes.
Not the same by a long shot. I bought a box of twinkies and within 3 weeks they were as green as a bag of B.C. Bud. Here are the actual ones I took the picture of.

"Crunchy White Toast" bread.
I don't remember who made it and it was only around for a couple of years.

Texture was halfway between bread and crumpet, square bread shape so it fit in the toaster perfectly. Worked exactly like the name says! Plus, porous to soak up your topping of choice (I liked it with lashings of butter and honey) while still remaining crunchy.

I was in denial, then mourning when it went away 🙁
Guess not enough people bought it...

Check out Aldi's Continental Pane di Casa - cheap as chips and very crunchy, it might do it for you ...

Yeah, good bread is still good toast, but this stuff wasn't exactly bread. Kinda part bread part crumpet mutant.
It still had a nice fluffy centre even with the crunchy outer layer...who knows what was actually in it, all I know is that it made the best toast EVER!
What can I say, I like crunchy toast.
And ice cream.
Just not together, and I can still get ice cream 😀

Callard and Bowser 'dessert nougat'.

AFAIK, it's still in production, though maybe not available in India. BTW, if you checked the ingredients carefully, it used to list some stuff which was decidedly non-kosher for Gujaratis - egg-white, beef-tallow. Maybe they've changed that later.

Edit: You're correct, it was bought by Kraft Foods and the Dessert Nougat was discontinued. It was still available c.1998/99 or so at outlets like Service Merchandise in the US. I haven't tasted it after that. However, there's an Aussie substitute called Rinaldi's that's supposed to be pretty close:

Curious me, are there rules for true Gujarati food ?
(as e.g. cow dairy products only )

Generally: vegetarian only, milk is ok, no eggs or animal products that require killing the animal. Garlic and onions are frowned upon by the more conservative elders. In some circles, cheese is frowned upon if it uses rennet, although Gujarat is the largest producer of cheese in India now.
