Directional bass, sub question

is DSP the future? I lookied at those mini DSP boxes and I'm wondering if thats the best choice for this sub/fullrange set up.

It might be, but they'd have to be digital and have high quality output stages, there's no way I'd put that many integrated circuits in any analog paths.

Perhaps in the theater rig, but I'd hope nobody sane would go: high quality source > d/a converter / phono preamp > good preamp > handful of cheap ICs > power amp (s)?

Or am I misunderstanding these MiniDSP units?

I don't mind spending a little extra time tinkering with passive crossovers anyway, they usually don't sound wrong until you put them in the box 😉

EDIT: Does anyone own one of these?

DSP has been the future since the late 1980's.
The cost has come down so much since then that DSP for home use is affordable.

A mini DSP box may not have enough filters and delay to be useful for more than some specific applications.

I think all the passive crossover parts I have just to be able to substitute values when designing them would cost more than the DBX Driverack PA DSP I use.

Behringer has DSP that many say is better than the DRPA, and costs a lot less.

so could you recommend a Behringer unit that i can use ? It would help me with this 4th order sub issue...

The Ultradrive Pro DCX2496 is the unit I'm thinking of, about half the price of a DBX DRPA, and has a few more features.

I can't really "recommend" the Behringer, as they have reliability issues.
You could get lucky, and get one that lasts forever without the frying egg sounds, or get one that goes bad a day after the warranty expires.

I do own a fair amount of Behringer stuff, but a DSP is too mission critical for me to hazard it's use in my PA.

For home use, maybe.

I can recommend the DBX unit, I have three and no issues with reliability or performance.
