a drop in replacement for the old lm318N op amp
TI still makes them.
Hello its for a phono stage the input/riaa chip....so there is no fet or jfet sub...only bjt!
hence why i asked for direct replacement meaning close offset bias etc..etc..etc..
hence why i asked for direct replacement meaning close offset bias etc..etc..etc..
Thanks, that's helpful. So presumably noise is an issue but maintaining the same GBW and SR isn't. I was going to suggest AD847 but I see its input bias current is probably 10X higher so may well be an issue with current noise. Why do you say no JFETs? OPA827 looks lower noise than LM318 so might well work fine.
Thanks....the circuit is somewhat optimized for the 318 thats why made that suggestion if you think that the opa 827 will work without issues i can give it a try but IMO bjt's sound much more realistic!
If you must have a bipolar then HA5221 is hard to beat - trouble is its not currently in production. But you might find one on the secondary market.
Thank you ...if you or anyone else has suggestions based on the above information please let me know

You should try a NE5534A for a MM phono pre-amp. Doug Self still thinks highly of them and so do I. I remember comparing my NE5533A design (dual ne5534) to my Pioneer Sx-950, way back and was impressed then.
The best is to use them in a two stage design rather than have all the gain done in one stage.
Does anyone know of a bjt i/p opamp, that has less input current noise than a NE5534A?
Refer to the Elektor 2012 pre-amp design as an example of the use of 5532,5534,lm4562, all stellar performers.
I do remember a lm318 app that used a lm394 as the input pair too, that had great peformance too.
Another option is to use a LME49600/610 power buffer, so that the feedback R can be much lower than what a 5534 can drive, too lower that noise contribution. This similar to a Lin Tech LT1115/LT1010
Lots of things to play with.
Have fun

To quote Doug Self, talking about his comp choice for the MM input stage of the 2012 pre-amp design.
Note that an NE5534A is used here for IC3 as it is quieter than half an NE5532, and considerably quieter than an LM4562, with its higher current noise. The high inductance of an MM cartridge makes low current noise important. Cartridge loading, and capacitance in particular, has a much greater effect on MM cartridges.
No offense to anyone but I tire from hearing designers talk about noise like thats THE most important aspect to a phono stage ...let me tell you it is not...I wish designers would talk about the musical qualities on there choices of components including op amps....what they here when they do this..... change a b c d. etc..which one sound more like the real thing...we just dont have designers like this its all bench and no listening or understanding what real music that we here live is all about ...

I am telling you, from experience, that a ne5534 is a great sounding opamp, period, but it is only my opinion and one that I will not argue about. A great $2 investment.
To be honest, I have never heard the sound through a lm318, so I would not dare to compare a lm318 against a ne5534. A fun thing to do, however but I am sure a lm318 sounds good too, even if it is a bit noisier 🙂
I can also have to say right now I am listening to my Si4735,MAX9729,TPA3100D2, design, some would say class "D", what crap, MLC caps, without even giving it a try.
Take peoples opinions, as a grain of salt, as they used to say.
Asking someone as to what their listening impressions are of an opamp are,,, well I get chuckles out of the answer I hear 🙂
I say put in a 8 pin socket and have fun going through them all.
I hear some say they like the sound of a Pioneer sx-950 (my first stereo) better than a pioneer sx-1250, I scatch my head, why technically? I know the sx-1250 design/construction is better in all regards, no idea why. I have never heard a sx-1250 , so I can't say myself until I do the test myself. Should I invest in a sx-1250 to see?
have fun with your opamp tests, it is always good to read impressions of circuits and just the fun of electronics.
