Dilemma:Visaton B200 or Fostex Fe206E + which box?

I have experience of the 206 in Sachiko and also built a pair of OB 's with a B200 and 2 X Eminence Alpha 15's each side. They both used in a room I would estimate at 5 X 7 M. Obviously they each have their strengths and weaknesses, and I must add that the OB 's were run via a Rane active crossover. If I had the choice again I think I would go with the OB As it had a greater range and scale. I am currently working on a pair of FH3's, as I like to try out different things.

Hi,

Thank you for the answers. I am in a process of cleaning a mess and trying to set up a hi-fi place. I made a few quick photos with my phone (sorry for the awful quality pics) just to give you an idea. Just yesterday I have bought a TV rack which will replace the one that amps are on now. In fact, the LCD TV will not sit there - it will be wall mounted while amps will be on top of the new rack, and preamps and CD player will be inside. As you could see, there are only about 60 cm from the back wall, but the WAF pressure is to push them closer to the wall so they don't obstruct the pathway. As you guessed, OB's don't do their best in such a setting.

On the other hand, I am willing to try some other speaker design, and I have to figure out the best way to combine the drivers I already own.
So, I have a pair of:
1. Fostex Fe206e
2. Visaton B200
3. Eminence Beta 15
4. CSS125fr.

There were several ideas going round in my head. The simplest would be to build a BiB with Fostex Fe206. But then, I don't like Fe206's sonics that much...
Visaton B200 is undermined in anything other than the Open Baffle, leaving it almost out of the option.
Eminence Beta 15 could probably be used as a small sealed subwoofer with Linkwitz EQ...(or perhaps H-frame?)
CSS125...I don't really know. Initially I wanted to build a F.A.S.T. system, but can't buy other drivers (good woofers) now, have to use what I have. If I put CSS in a small sealed box, it will need help on the bottom, and I don't know if Betas can be properly used for that purpose...
Or, build a BiB with CSS125 + Betas in a sealed box doing the lowest octave...
Or, build a "Half-Calhoun" with a single CSS125fr -only the bottom mouth (like half-Chang)+ a Beta in a sealed box.. (or H-frame)

So, a mess, both in the room and in my head...
All ideas are welcome...
Thanks again,

Vix

Today I've made even more mess 🙂
Did some testing and comparison, Open Baffle versus Sealed Box(es)
Gotta sleep now. Two quick pics now, impressions tomorrow...

Perhaps off topic, but I'd like to share some findings and thoughts with you...

Yesterday and today I have been playing with speakers. As I have moved the hi-fi to another room, I was wondering whether something other than Open Baffle may sound better (or worse). So I tried it out.
I had a pair of old sealed speakers in my basement. They are modified and don't sound bad at all-almost a FAST concept with a 8" woofer and a 3" fullrange, crossed over with a 1st order crosover somewhere at 400 Hz. + I borrowed a pair of 12" sealed DIY subwoofers from friend, just for a test. Then I tried several combinations.
1. Sealed subwoofer + sealed "FAST" on top. Doesn't sound bad, if I didn't have open baffles, perhaps I'd be heppy with this. When compared with full Open Baffle, sealed boxes sound..hmm..well just like typical hi-fi. They sound "correct", but somehow uninvolving, lacking emotion...not my cup of tea
2. Sealed (Sub)woofer +fullrange on Open Baffle. To my surprise, this worked quite nice. Now I understand why a concept of a sealed woofer + fullrange Open Baffle works. Just remembered that there was a project "Basszilla". Compared to fully Open Baffle, the bass was deeper, but...it was a little boomy and I found it a bit tiring over longer periods of listening.
3. Open Baffle Woofer and a sealed FAST. Oh no. This didn't work.

The final verdict is that full Open Baffle sounds superior. I only miss a bit of the bottom end, but the overall sound is much better. Over time I have done several attempts to improve OB bass. Two things made the most difference: 1.EQ (built-in into crossover-similar to something that Nelson Pass has done on his B4 active crossover). 2. Slot loading the woofer (Eminence Beta 15).
For a moment I also tried temporarily adding wings to the bass section of the Open Baffle, only to be reminded of the reason why I had removed them. Bass became boomier and less pleasing. I removed the wings again. Makes me wonder how H-fame sounds...
So, which is the way forward? There is still room for improvement of Open Baffles. I guess that adding another woofer (Beta 15), also slot loaded will make it sound even better. Apart from having to buy an additional set of woofers, the question is whether will be better to put them straight on the plain baffle one above the other, or Slot Load them in the way Nelson Pass did on his Open Baffles. Maybe I'll try do this someday.

The fullranger Viaton B200 isn't bad, but I began to want something more refined. A better fullrange unit will make the whole Open Baffle sound even better...
So, Open Baffles are going to stay.
But there will always be a worm of curiosity, nagging me to try a BiB and a FH3...
