Talking about a revolutionary new state-of-the-art mic is one thing, talking about the mic on the end of your measuring boom is another completely.

Trying to use it to prove what you've been saying about mics is like using an F18 as proof of the performance of your Piper Cub. Or using the Hubble to describe the performance of your Celestron.

It is to nice to see these kinds of breakthrus in tech, as it will let us see further. And that it is so cheap (relatively -- $2k is still beyond most of us).

I would beware, there is a bit of hubris in that write up. For one the concept of noise "not existing" in this context is meaningless.

OK. Let's look at a back electret condenser example. Nothing exotic, not cheap, but we're not talking about price, just whether or not a mic can measure more than our ears can hear.

Here's a Sony, nothing fancy, a better version than the typical Panasonic capsule, though that will do most if not all of what we need. The Panasonic capsules are, I believe, actually more sensitive, but not as good in S/N as the Sony.

Sony Condenser

Sensitivity: -28db
S/N: 78db
Dynamic range: 111db or more

The question isn't whether or not poor DIYers can do this, it's whether or not readily available microphones can. The answer is yes, even a Panasonic mic can do well enough for probably 99% of what we do.

Normal coincident stereophonic and monophonic outputs are also included, of course. 6.023 x 10^23... that thar's a big number... 10^6 MIPS x 16 is still pretty small compared to that!!! har har har

I got excited reading it at first; if true it would have truly remarkable implications for my field (SONAR). As most engineers do, I ignored the acronyms and skimmed the text. It wasn't till he talked of reaching temperatures of -237F with a heat pump compressor that I checked the header of the article and noticed that it was published in April of 1995. The year told me all I needed to know about the veracity (would we not all be using them by now), the month confirmed the joke was on me. An excellent ruse!

By the way, I think the EnABL thing is a bunch of "Spherical Holographic Information Transcription" to quote the clever Mr. Moulton. It is an interesting read into psychology and I will say that in that regard it is not a total waste.

microphone madness

The cool thing is that all on this thread who believe that EnAble is a bunch of "Spherical Holographic Information Transcription" are welcome to wear really expensive ear plugs when the music is on, and point a perfectly engineered microphone at their speakers and look at graphs on their computers.
Personally, I'm going to listen to the music. Ever since I finished EnAbling, I have become delusional and really believe the sound is worth savoring. Silly me. Back to musical nirvana. No argument there.
Oh, another listening impression. For the first couple of days, I couldn't leave the Jazz alone. Last night near the end of my listening time I popped on YoYo Ma. Unbelievable! Sampled Choir music with Anonomous 4. The space and harmonics were perfect. Then a Bach organ recital. Not formerly my cup of tea. I was transformed to a cathedral and experienced that room effect I have read about. I was in the cathedral and had a perfect sense of the scale of the room.

Don't know wlowes cost structure....try the search function for auplater AND RD75 posts from 2006 or so... it's here somewhere...

besides... I'm just making a subjective observation of the sound I (and others) have witnessed...😉

Here is one of my speakers... Bought them new in 1982 for $300. Generally available now for anywhere from $10 - $350 depending on condition. Mine were mint but the foam was shot so $10. My cost to transform included new foam surrounds $2, 2 sheets of felt - $5, new 18guage solid copper with teflon - $0.50, putty $6, modpodge $2.50, acrylic paint $2.50, microgloss $2.50. New crossover here's the big one about $50 in parts for blackgate AC caps. So I figure about $80 CDN or $60 USD. Here is the pic.
