Noob alert!
Ok, that over. I'm always very willing to learn and don't really give a flying about the theory, but i'll happily give a listen in and definitely be up for a bit of soldering!
So I want (don't we all) a way to get .flac songs into a small device, from my pc, (ideally a SD card) and be able to plug it into my car ( I need a decent powersupply too so any help is loved ), to output through my Headunit ( the headunit i'm looking at currently only has spdif input. ) So from .flac files on ideally an SD card to an spdif output.
What can you guys give to me?
I have a basically brand new iPod ( so no modding yet ), however we all know the DAC on the iPod is it's major downfall.
So i'm after anything that is movable ( I'd prefer solid state though ) , which can play .flac and output to spdif ( also after a suitable 12-14.4v ps ).
I would seriously only need a change track button (one forward and backwards would be nice), also an on and off switch ( which could work off the remote off the headunit, so be integrated into the ps ).
Thanks in advance. 😀

I remember seeing in a thread that someone had listed some mp3 players that also supported play flac files. That sounds like the easiest way to go. I believe it was a thread on mp3s.
Check this out, might help

The i-river i have looked into, however I dislike the small storage (relatively).
Is there anyway to modify an i-river to take a larger SD card?
Thanks
EDIT:
The i-river also has optical spdif out, i'd need electrical ( the rca kind ).
There's another thread in here like what i'm after but i believe it only has i2s output...

This looks very interesting, going to look at one for myself this week
SanDisk Sansa Clip+ Plus Review
Review states it allows up to an extra 32 GB storage in micro sd

Yes! Yes! Yes! Someone that cares about the actual sound of something and not how many oversampled bits can fit in his shorts! 😀
...
Nothing useful to contribute... just had to say that

Cheers!
What can i say?
Thanks msb64.
The mp3 player looks good, but it still doesn't have a spdif output.
SPdif output is a must, the file formats don't matter all that much (wav or flac), it's just to store a large amount of data which can easily be pulled off my computer. (Just like my ipod is doing on my current unit).
I've seen this: ELM - Simple SD Audio Player with an 8-pin IC
That's what i'm after, just a cleverer one so it outputs to spdif not analogue, also so it has a return button too not just a forwards one.
I don't want any fancy screens, or volume buttons, or anything like that, just a chip or 2 , bit of wire, odd resistor here and there, a few caps maybe, touch of soldering, sd card holder, and sdpif connector.
Lovely!
Is there really nothing out there like this?
