ok I am fairly new to this so I thought I would offer a brief guide, if I have missed anything, please add to it.
dacs:
burr brown
analog devices
crystal
dcs ring dac
npc
philips
wolfson
which is best? BB?
dig filter
FIR a la wadia/pioneer
or
IIR which is the usual.
I-V options
resistor
transformer : both 'passive'
inverting opamp I-V or
discrete stage
LPF
bessel function, any others?
usually 3rd order
I suspect apart from the dac and filter choice, this is the area that determines the sound as its most tweakable am I correct?
unity gain buffer
opamp or discrete
anyone care to elaborate on the points?

What is the basis for this statement? It seems wrong.

If I may add some themes
- jitter
- (PCB)layout
- power supply (noise, output impedance, bandwidth)
Personally I am OK with PCM1704 with active IV
cheers
Re: Re: digital design summary overview
Why the departure from the passive i/v in your PCM63 dac and would the active i/v be opamp or discrete ?

Opamps: I can live with AD797 or OPA627 (assumed the power supplies are OK
Discrete: Yes, tubes and transistors are still OK
