Is there a cross-over that works in the digital domain ?

There are some, but all with a hefty pricetag. Most for PA applications but usable as general purpose x-over.

Of course, companies like JBL, EV etc have such processors for specific speakers.

You might want to check out Behringer.

I am evaluating a project based on software and PC. The subject has come up from time to time on this board. The most interesting implementation involved using labview from National Instruments.
