Digi key or mouser?

If the leads are surface mounted, you remove them like the ones in the following video.

SGS Thomson is now ST Microelectronics.

The white paste doesn't serve as an electrical insulator.

If there were no insulators originally, you don't need any now unless the anodizing is damaged/peeling under the transistors. If you need insulators, I'd suggest mica insulators. Either way, you'll need heatsink compound. You can get it at Radio Shack.

I'm not sure if the video link works or it's possibly my computer.

Does anyone know what is cheaper to use? this is my first time doing this and i'm not sure what is cheaper or better?

This is what they gave me to use for shipping and i'm sure which is cheaper? Please give me some advice i'm about ready to buy everything but i'm stalling on the shipping here.

"shipping cost determined at the time of shipment"

UPS Ground
UPS 3rd Day
UPS 2nd Day
UPS Next Day Saver
UPS Next Day
UPS Next Day Early AM
UPS Next Day Saturday Delivery
FedEx Ground
FedEx 3rd Day
FedEx 2nd Day
FedEx Standard Overnight
FedEx Priority Overnight
FedEx Saturday Delivery
FedEx Priority Overnight Early AM
USPS Priority Mail w/Delivery Confirmation"

I am in Canada, sometimes i have "digikey vs mouser races" by ordering at the same time and they have each won about half the time both never have customs charges or any of the usual UPS/fedex hassles🙂

mouser is definitely cheaper /better selection for pots and switches if you need a lot of them (i am building a modular synthesizer, so..i do 🙂 )

for other things i just look at both and if there is a big enough difference to cover the shipping i will split the order between them. sometimes the difference between the prices can be quite large for some ICs.

I don't know what's going to be the cheapest. I'd consider FedEx and UPS as the better carrier due to tracking.

The video works for me on two different computers. I have the VLC media player installed. It's less finicky than Windows Media Player.

Like FedEx 3rd day shipping? Or UPS ground? I think I'll just go with FedEx.

It must be my laptop because I don't have any video software installed because I just had it repaired.

I've already bought the parts now just waiting for the shipping price to to add to final order and i guess they'll ship after all that. Got 4 2N6488's and 4 2N6491's and 8 mica insulation pads. And some heatsink compound from radio shack.

Thanks to everyone who gave there opinion and big thanks to Perry Babin.

I'll keep posted when i get the parts because the transistors are soldered on a different way than most amps.

The amp won't perform any better but would be more reliable with new outputs.

With any old amp, you have to expect more random failures than with a new amp. If it's going to sit on a shelf, replace only what needs to be replaced. If you're going to drive it hard daily, you may want to replace a few more parts than what's absolutely necessary to get it working.

Hey Perry I got a problem with the amp mean while I'm waiting for the parts to arive I was probing around and I found what is probably one of the driver transistors to be defective it looks like a TO-220 but with a larger bent back mounting tab that has the marking "D4008" it read 0 ohms on all three legs so I suspect that's not good. Ohh and I think the other output transistors may have survived "2N6491" both of them have a reading of 470 ohms base, collector, emitter. Are you familiar with this part? Thanks!

I like USPS Priority Mail, and DK seems to handle this better than Mouser. Sometimes I'll get a DK package the next day with USPS Priority. Mouser is faster when using UPS.

Mouser has done a good job with their web site and search engine. They also stock WIMA, ThatCorp IC's and great film resistors.

The D40D8 and the D41D8 are generally difficult to find and when you do, they're expensive. As a sub, I'll generally use the MPSW42/MPSW92 with clip-on heatsinks or 2N6488/2n6491 installed with the leads shifted over one place and the emitter hardwired back to the board.

Central Semi has a CENU07/CENU57 that are drop in replacements (for this application) but they're also difficult to find.

If the transistor reads 470 ohms between leads out of the board, it's defective.

Wooow! Your right I searched for the part and it appears to be a driver transistor and West Florida Components wants $7.00 each, yikes! I guess I'll just go with what you recommend with the clip on heatsink. Or show/explain alittle more in deph how to do the last thing you said. I'll get pics of the board if you need?
