Difference beetween MC & MD phono preamp

I'm looking for a cheap phono preamp for an MC phono. I found cheap one but they are for MD. Could it work for MC ? (don't really need quality)

High output MCs work into normal MM phono stages.

I like This. There are PCBs and kits for sale.

For low, but not ultra-low, output carts like the Denon DL-103 you might have to change the R2 to about 1k. Ask the designer.

But as sreten said, the cart decides what headamp to use.

You mean it was a typo in the original post? That was what I suspected.


However, with all the strange stuff around nowadays I could almost be prepared to buy that mini-disc explanation. 🙂

No typo, MD = MagnetoDynamic or similar, means MM.

German Elektor stubbornly wrote always MD too. That was 10+ yrs ago...don't know yet.

Aha, OK. I don't think I have heard that term before and it is obviously a very ambigious term that, in my opinion, could just as well refer to any pickup, both MM and MC.

I somehow doubt 'magneto-dynamic' has ever been an accepted English term. German?

Perhpaps it is actually a very old term that was used when the first magnetic pickups appeared long ago, and I suppose those were of MM type. One of the archivists somewhere deep in my brain says he might have seen it in some old text somewhere.

It is a common used term in literature.
No idea when it was first introduced though. Perhaps when the first MM was available. 🙂
