IMO it will be hard to do this way because the fabric will have almost no contact with a dowel surface as long as it it just a rod - it will diverge quickly but not in a conical shape. I think you'd really need to have a conical section at the end of the dowel.

I guess you are right. Even more so when an asymmetrical horn is attempted.
