Desktop Open Baffle Speaker System Project

Progress.. cutouts

Progress.. cut out the baffles. The round speaker opening were not too difficult to make but the sides needed to be straightened out after cutting. Next time I may get these done professionally.

Pictures..

I would use one of these..
Of course.

In my haste I cut it sawed through the plywood and it was not in a straight line. No matter. It really looks better than I imagined like some of the OB speakers shown on this forum.

Did not test it for sound yet... Could it be so different from the corrugated cardboard prototype?

As for speaker wire, I will re-use the wire that came with another set of PC speakers for now. I have to get it up and running soon, then I will refine it.

And two more things: I need to repair the crushed dome of the speaker, and also repair screwdriver punctures in the speaker cone. Good thing I didn't use Wifa drivers to start with.

It sounds great. These are the clearest speakers I have ever heard, detail that is heard only with earphones can be heard here, great punch and dynamics and high end. Matched with my TEA2025 based amp from a PC speaker, this is what I need for my desktop. One side only for now, using the NP 4.7uf capacitor that came with the tweeter.

My test material was track 12 to the end of a WAV/FLAC conversion of this CD. Can't remember which.

Further Testing:
I played the same tracks on my car stereo and found that except for lacking bass, which is to be expected, the music is a little less detailled on the car audio than on my speakers - so no loss of detail.

Also, running the system with the equalizer in flat position was unacceptable (in the car). Once I use a software EQ on my source I should be fine. The tweeters are a little forward, but it is really nice to listen in stereo, no Bluetooth speakers needed anymore. I could use a BT speaker as a sub-woofer, though.

Simply the best speakers I have ever listened to. There is even some sharp bass in there somewhere. "Promise" by Sade, an album I have listened to many times in the past on all sorts of systems, sounds great. I can only now hear the expression and emotion in her voice, what a great voice. Anyone got goosebumps listening to a good stereo? There are also instruments and sounds I have never heard in detail before.

Of course, given a proper cabinet with a port things could be improved somewhat in the basses, and with near field listening detail would not be lost too much. I am getting 68 dB at 10 cm from woofer by the way, at 80% volume.

Back to building the subwoofer for this thing. I looked at the Edifier set pictured here:

It has a single 4 inch 10 cm woofer underneath, firing downwards. Removing the speaker from the enclosure resulted in less bass, much less bass, which was no surprise. I could not get a look at the 11 W amplifier though, which probably has a large inductor somewhere. There is a separate amplifier for the satellite speakers.
Removing the plastic port tube and putting it back again resulted in a noticeable shifiting of bass towards the lower frequencies.

Testing with the Radio Shack 40-1011 showed some promise, I plan to place it under the desk with a proper ported enclosure. It is strange, but in some positions the speaker outputs much more bass than others.
