Designs for small rooms or close to wall positions?

Correct, I am possibly changing the PMCs - and you're right, I should just try them in the room first of all! Before then, I need to actually build the space...

With all that said, my path therefore appears to be:
  1. Keep PMCs, install surrounds/overheads/subs, make/install amplifier selector switch between Naim stack/AVR and PMCs (so I can either have Naim driving the PMCs, or the AVR, but they are electrically isolated from each other)
  2. Introduce Hifiberry Digital transport + DSP as primary audio source and room EQ (RPi4 + Digi2 Pro + DSP add-on board)
  3. Figure out if I need new LR, or if it's merely want/desire to tinker.
So now I'm back to working out what the surrounds/overheads/centre should be. Currently looks like the main contenders are:
  • Trapezoidal miniOnken
  • CHR-70 surrounds
  • Overnight Sensations
  • A.N.Other small two-way
Plus working out the subwoofer. All thoroughly OT and not exactly FR, so I'll leave it here and start new threads as appropriate!

In all simplicity up against the wall.
No rear ports. No open baffle.

Might as well go wide baffle or mount directly to the wall.
No need to fuss with annoying baffle step.

As with any speaker approaching high frequency at crossover
point. Center to center spacing needs to be tight tight as possible.
the real world physical limit is how close you can mount them together.
That is what yah get.

ceiling and floor are largest walls, actual anomalies finally results from
interaction with those large planes, to side wall.

Same old same old, usually 15 to 20 degree toe in.
Big bass dips are from being to far from largest plane.
likely the floor. Bass can stay close to the floor.
To get highs at listening height. Sitting / standing
Sitting probably more realistic, and low crossover
makes that distance feasible to keep bass close to largest plane.
ceiling or floor, pick one. most likely the floor

Did you jump straight to 7.2.4? I'm contemplating a 4.2.2 to begin with, with easy access to ceiling and walls to move to 6/7.2.4 if desired/needed

And do you listen to music through the same setup?
Not directly, no. Ran 5.1.2 for probably 5 years, with a succession of Denon then Onkyo AVRs)
Graduated from an earlier model of AVR that didn’t support Atmos (Onkyo TX NR 818 - a very nice piece, but, you know FOMO, 2 foot-itis 😉). There’s still a couple of limitations with the RZ740’s ability to assign internal amp channels - so the rear surrounds still need an external amp - and the two subwoofer outputs are in parallel, hence the miniDSP for PEQ and time alignment.
I’m not sure that the journey is over yet - with only two small independent subs somehow it feels like somethings missing😱

Sorry for the scattershot edits to this post - a bit distracted at the moment.
Not too sure how much of this is relevant to the OP; as while my surrounds are in ceiling / wall or corner boundary mounted, the front row triad is approximating two feet out, and of course the proximity to boundaries is quite significant to the enclosure tuning and any EQ, etc.
