XM Satellite Radio has a reciever that is designed to be connected and controlled by a computer - the XM PCR. While its only been out a couple of months, it is a piece of kit and of course opening it up and seen what could be done with it is a first priority.
To this end, the fine folks have rewritten the control application and are buzy porting it to other OS's. They have also created a Client Server version to enable internet / network use. It is still rough, but getting there.
The more interesting parts are digital signals out. Most guess that due to pressure from the Record Companies, all of the receivers to date have only came with analog audio out. Of course someone took the PRC apart and started sniffing. He discovered the presence of digital audio on some pins and has created a breadboard digital output that he is now creating its final form.
This is detailed in this thread - PCR Hardware Hack The project is in somewhat of a hold pattern for the moment. However, it is coming very close to bearing fruit.
So I would love it if some of you digital genius's (Jocko, Fred, Frank, and others - I don't want to leave anyone out) would take a look at the thread and see if you have any suggestions to maximize the sound quality of the card and the proposed mod. Granted the signal has been compressed till it screams, but at least with the chance of using digital outputs we may have better than expected sound quality.
Be interesting in your comments.
