design help: box=20L, ... drivers=?

Hi, I know this is the absolutely worst way to design a loudspeaker but anyways, .....

I built the following bookshelf enclosures just to see what my fostex 6.5" would sound like (quite nice actually. but they do perfer horns, where they now reside).

anyway, i now have a pair of boxes with INTERNAL dimensions of 8.5"W x 9.5"D x 15"H (roughly about 20 L or 0.7 cu.ft). I would like to build a working system out of these, since the cabinets are quite useable. i used 3/4 " MDF throughout and have not sealed the front baffle in yet.

i'd like to use these with my mcintosh MC-2100 power amp (105WPC), so efficiency is not an issue, .... more important is sound and frequency extenstion, and the all important dynamics

design goals:

speaker type: bass reflex / sealed 2 way , ... maybe MTM ot TMM- buut i doubt if the baffle is longenough???? i wonder if using a pod tweeter top mounted would work.

driver size: 6.5" to 8"

tone: the mcintosh tends to have a warm bouncy, not over-detailed sound, so i desire a detailed sound (not bright, but not dull overwarm). this speaker must do bass and slam (though not boomy bass) but not at the expense of midrange clarity. since the old mcintosh warhorse has autoformers, driver impedance is not an issue at all.

price range (drivers + crossover) - not decided yet but would like to keep it under $200 unless there is something for a little more $$$ that would sound substantially better:

$100 per pair - recommendations ==???

$200 per pair recommendations == ???

$300 per pair recommendations == ???

i used the partsexpress driver wizard and some speakers suggested

VIFA P17WJ-00 6-1/2" woofer ( i number of designs i saw on the www say that this a bit bass-shy woofer), a quick model with winisd

PIONEER B20FU20-51FW 8" full range (often used in full range enclosures, ..but not sure how well this would do in a conventional box speaker),

PIONEER B20FU20-51D 8" HD POLY WOOFER ????

HI-VI F8 8" BASS/MIDRANGE ?????

AUDAX AP170ZO 6-1/2 ???????

tweeters ??? - much more open to suggestions, ... the choice of woofer is more critical in this case as the box volume is fixed.

...any other suggestions / advice for drivers / designs ,

please post. i'm new to the speaker design thing so forgive any naive questions. still trying to figure out how to use speakerworkshop

fuuny i thought dallas TX was in the US 🙂

at 20L yo can build a either a 5" 2.5 way for a 6" 2 way.

msot 5" need 12 liters and 6" need 20-25liters.

I'd prefer sealed but then it is a personal issue.

of the 5" and 6" mid priced ($30-60) woofers i'd short list the Vifa (TC or PL depends on budget), Peerless (CSX) and Audax Aerogel series.

of the 1" tweeters Morel offers good VFM other than that Vifa's soft domes are easy to handle. Peerless DT100 or DT105 are nice too.

if you wanna get crazy VIfa XT line is intersting too esp a combo using the 18WH00 and 25TG30 but then at this price Focal and a lot of others should be also evaluated.

I have used the Vifa P17WJ00. For me, it is a good value and an easy driver to work with. Smooth roll off. And not bass shy at all. it is perfect for a 20l vented enclosure.

Have a look at Seas alu cone woofer too. L18. They may be much more hard to crossover properly due to bad breakup of the cone but the sound of metal cone is sweet to my ears...

speaking of aluminum cones, ...

i posted sometime earlier asking for opinions on dayton aluminum 7" http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=295-335 , post but not much came out of that thread. ..anyfurther suggestions?

and of more conventional drivers, .. ????

what about dynavox??
dynavox ... not much mentioned on this forum about that driver?

... i can model these drivers in my enclosures later, ..but for now, ..am just looking for opinions on various brands

For 200$, i definitely suggest making a 2 way with a 6.5 in woofer and a 1 inch tweeter. Not very original indeed! But, the crossover won't cost you too much if you use drivers that are easy to manage.

40-60$ approx for each woofer,
30$ approx for each tweeter,
30$ on crossover parts

There are LOADS of good drivers in that price range. Go to madisound for catalogs and visit LDSG for some comments.
