I understand the sentimental aspect. As it stands, I am holding onto some drivers from old Yamaha and Cambridge Soundworks speaker sets. The Yamaha 2.1 was my first set of PC speakers and would have made a fine 2.1 speaker had I not trashed the enclosure. I ran the old subwoofer full range after the amp circuits got shorted out. It had a very mellow but pleasant sound, despite the high frequency rolloff. I later dropped the 4" subwoofer into a plywood enclosures meant for a cheapo full range, and it sounded worse than the original driver. I later tried to make a 1st order crossover out of an electrolytic cap (nevermind AC and electrolytics don't mix well) and a 2" full range to handle the treble notes, but I got the crossover all wrong and there was a notable hump in the upper midrange.Stardust,
thank you for sharing your experience and comments.
As you suggested, it has become now a matter of sentimentalism and holding the point, BUT it is also in some respects a sort of experiment on how the sound can get better with better, although cheap, enclosure (and despite the complete dumbness of the author...)
Cheers
G.
Years later I discovered DIYaudio and still wanted to craft a 2-way, but without the Theil-Small parameters of the old woofer, it would be a lost cause. Next best thing is to copy the enclosure it came with. The sub came in a ported box and had really good bass extension for it's size, but the enclosure got trashed long ago. And I suppose there are other issues as well. Most small "subs" with low Fs are pretty thick and massive thus don't have the sensitivity to properly pair them with lighter high range. Perhaps an inline resistor could have reduced the hump of the high driver, but I digress.
More than likely for now I'll stick to full rangers for DIY experiments, or at least kits for 2-ways. Those Tritrix kits sound promising but then it's just a "follow the instructions" thing with proven results, not really brewing your own. Take care and good luck...😉

It is my suspicion that grundig do some eq on some of there all in one, like radios for example. The drivers may not sound the same without the grundig amp. Just a suspicion...
having said that drivers from "mid fi" equipment can be quite good when hooked up to decent setup, and maybe tweaked / crossover eq-ed a bit.
