Got a Denon DCD-1290 EX-serie from my dad. CD is running, but no sound coming out. Not through my KEF speakers, neither through the phones out. Anything an audio dummy like me can do?

Moved to Digital Source.
Have you had the top off ? Circuit diagram ?
Check that any muting at the audio output isn't active. If it all appears to work, display advances correctly etc then you could have a fair chance of success.
Thanks for moving the item..
No muting at output and everything seems to work, also display etc. I guess I must be overseeing something.. New tips?

You have confirmed by measurement that the mute line isn't active and that the voltage on collector of TR703 is zero ?
You measure it here (1st diagram) where it should be zero volts. You can also pick the direct mute feed from the system control here (2nd diagram) which might be easier to find. Again it should be zero when playing a disc.

The second picture is the headphone amp and so that should be easy to find, probably near the actual socket itself.
Hi Mooly,
Thanks a lot for the diagrams, very helpful! I measured both, both are zero. Any next steps?

Next steps would be to use an oscilloscope and check for audio at the output of the D/A convertors.
This sounds a strange problem... the fact it 'plays' and is fully functional apart from actually having audio present suggests it could be a fairly deep seated fault.
We always check the basics first which means checking all the appropriate power rails are present. At this stage that means confirming +12 and -12 volts is on pins 8 and 4 respectively of the upc4570 opamps. There should also be +5 and -5 on pins 16 and 8 of the AD1861 D/A convertors. Hard to see there could be a problem there as they are duplicated but check anyway. Any problem there could conceivably reflect back and corrupt the data applied to both convertors.
Beyond that and a scope is probably required to dig deeper into what is going on.

Hmm, that's not sounding very promising. I'll try checking as you suggest. Will let you know. Thanks again.
