*Dedicated Electronics Work Space
Hello All,
I have looked over and viewed a couple topics already on this forum but thought it would be nice to get some more input.
I am currently finishing my basement off in my home and I have decided that I am going to have a dedicated electronics work space. The room is about 11' x 13' all for me (yes i know im lucky). I spend most of my time doing audio and programming related projects (usually together) i still just get my boards made online, but may looking etching myself. My thoughts are to have benches around all the walls and do a rubber tile flooring so i can roll around easily on my chair (possibly do esd wax as well, have to look into price). I was thinking to divide the equipment into three areas: Programming, breadboarding, solder/mechanical. I havent done electronics in over a YEAR!!! trying to finishing building my house... finally just about there
I will build shelving 16" or so above the desktop to put equipment on and yes i will make it sturdy. I have already wired one dedicated 20amp circuit to the room and there is another 15 amp common circuit with the other bedroom so power should be ok. I installed 3 recessed lights above the "breadboarding workspace" and will still have a magnifyer light as well.
if any one has any suggestions of what they would do with the area, or things they just cant live without, by all means please share your input 🙂. Money is not a huge concern (as far as constructing the workspace) new equipment will come as i find a need/use for it.

-lab PC (for my USB scope, audio test files etc...)
-2x22" monitors for CAD PC
-1x17" monitor for the Lab PC
-benchtop PSU (2x30VDC 4amps each)

-digital multi meters (just cheap kind, i need a good benchtop one)
-test amp/speakers
-solder rework station (vaccum and hot air)
-soldering iron
-parts bins
-tools

Dedicated Electronics Work Space? I call that "my apartment". Can't remember the last time I was able to eat a meal at my kitchen table. 😱
You will need more power! Always do. I dont think I would combine Soldering and Mechancal thay dont mix well. Keep Mechancal stuff (drill chips) away from the electronics if you can. Mix prototyping and programing, put drilling on the other end and soldering in the middle. Vary nice by the way. Andy
Thanks for the input everyone. I guess what i meant by "mechanical" is where i demo/salvage equipment. No drilling yet (I have a garage for my metal work and box building and the real dirty stuff) That being said I may start making pcb's and drilling... better change it up a little. Sorry about the spelling, thats why i do electronics and not journalism 🙂
With lighting, the rule I like to use is "Too much is just enough."
What about putting in some sort of fume hood for solder fumes. Could even be the kind you put over your stove.

yes, i forgot about that. Ya i will be drilling an exhasut fan/range hood or one of those 5" moveable tubes on a mount with an inline fan in probably (it was my original intent) Right now they way i have it drawn there is a window above where i will be soldering, i have a window mounted fan which works ok... good point. as for beer fridge... i will have bar downstairs about 10 steps from this room, that should be close enough 😀
keep the ideas comming, cause once its built i am not going to have the ambition to add to it, i need to get back to actual circuits and wortk on my integrated amb with usb/iphone control!
