DC Power Source for PWM Motor Controller

I'm working on a record lathe that has the feed screw for the cutting head driven by a 12VDC 30RPM gear box motor. The owner wants a PWM motor controller wired in for it. Is there any reason a dedicated SMPS can't be used for the DC input to the controller?

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't allow a 16kHz PWM power supply anywhere near a record lathe.

Additionally, an SMPS will usually have an output voltage adjustment range that doesn't include all the possibilities needed for a feed screw.

A simple pot and capacitance-filtered wiper, going to a MOSFET Gate might be a better choice. The efficiency gains of a PWM supply are likely not warranted.
