Not tried. An LM78xx to LT317/LM317 converter at that price seems very expensive to me. Be aware that at least the datasheet differences between LM78xx and LM317 are often not big. OK, you get a variable output voltage but else the improvement is limited.

That I understand. But there are no specifications given apart from output voltage (and current). LM317 is not that bad, even 78xx is not hopeless. How do you know if this regulator is an important improvement? Claiming "better performance" but giving no indication to what you can expect, for that price I would be skeptic. That it is discrete is no guarantee for anything. It can be better - or worse. 😕

I've had good results using TPS7A4701 LDO modules in the past, and they are around the same price as the one you posted.

Similar to these ones:

And you can get negative voltage versions also.
