DC Amp to drive 15" Speaker

Hi there,

I'm building a mobile speaker and looking for a suitable amp with high enough power to drive a 8ohm 15" PA speaker with horn.

Idealy it runs on ~54V DC so i can power it with my e-bike lithium battery.

I thought about using a TPA3255 board but this only puts out ~160w @ 8ohms

Maybe i could run the horn with a second amp and filter at the input, but i think this is still not enough to run the woofer.

Are there any alternatives?

Thank you for any input

Cheers!

Hello,
It would be nice to know which speaker it is your going to have and what the sensitivity is. Most 15" speakers are very efficient e.g. at 1 metre with 1 Watt input the output will be 90 db! Don't stand that close for any longer than about 20 mins it would ruin your hearing.

Hello,

May I suggest that you use a db indicating App, the iPad ones are OK, there is an Android one that will go down down to 0.25 secs, use these to determine your own listening levels. In a reasonably sized room that will be 75 to 80 db, reflections will cancel out the 1w at 1mtr, speaker tests are (or should be) done in an Anechoic chamber.

Using that 75/80 db your 99db speaker using 1 Watt will be at 78 db at 7 mtrs away. If you were at 1mtr from your speaker the 75/80 db would occur at 1/128th of a Watt.

Mr Voight would fill a movie theatre with 2 Watts using a similar arrangement.

Manufacturers prefer to obfuscate the obvious to fool the gullible.

Cheers

Hello
If you were actually to put 170 Watts into your speaker it would blow the cone straight out of it.
You must learn the simple mathematics e.g. for every 3db increase in volume you need to double the power e.g again 90 db = 1 Watt 93 db = 2 Watts. Use what's between your ears to take it up to 170 Watts.
Cheers

Thank you, so if i want to use the full potential of the speaker the recommendation for a 250 - 500w amp is about correct.

I need a battery powered single speaker that it at least as loud and cheaper than the big bluetooth sets from jbl, teufel etc.

This seemed the right way to go.
