Dayton Titanic MkIII 10" woofer -- problems

Has anyone purchased one recently? Any issues?

I got my Parts Express kit in March, nice stuff, easy to put together (minor issue with the grill nubs, they were premounted and all 4 broke off either in transit or when I took the grill out of its' bag. PE replaced).

The good news: this sub does work fine off the speaker taps of the Sonic Impact T-Amps, i.e. the negative L&R high-level inputs are not tied together on this sub amp. It's also a very decent music sub for the price, imo. Integrates very nicely with my Omega 3's.

The bad news: on Sunday my woofer fried out after only 3 weeks. It just started distorting, badly. This happened to another guy on the Omega forum, and his replacement woofer also did it. (PE told him that Dayton started using a new glue and it can crack after exposure to cold..??) I'm waiting for the replacement from PE, I just hope they got this problem solved.

Man I have been thinking about buying one of these subs from them. But I have been hearing bad things. I realize PE fixes all of the issue eventually, but it still sounds like an awful pain in the ***.

I have 2 monster subs already so I don't REALLY need another one, but.......

Yea i've had an issue with my sub. At first i noticed a rattling distortion inside. So i thought maybe the dustcap was the problem. However i opened it up and pushed and prodded and realized that there is wire stiched in the spider on the opposite side form the voicecoil leads. Snipping just a tiny bit off this fixed the problem but it came back and i'm going to have to call partsexpress again.

Got my replacement woofer today, it played ok through one record and then started crapping out just like the other one. If I let it 'rest' a while and then switch it back on, it seems to do ok for a few minutes, then caca. Voice coil??

Then I let it sit awhile (on) with no signal, and after around 20 mins both the woofer and my Fostex drivers just started thumping away like crazy! wtf

Hmmm P.E. having a bad run of woofers? I bought a Tang Band 8" sub and when it arrived, the glue around the spider was only glued to the V.C. on one side. you can see where they didnt glue it right and the spider came loose causing a bad sound.

On your sub. could it be your amp thats bad? if it works ok, then quits working, then works ok again after you shut it off. i would tend to think its a bad amp.

Before I sent the first woofer back I tested the plate amp on my Omegas, it was fine. It is strange though.

I can see PE with a bad run of woofers, but that would have nothing to do with your Tang Band unit.

This does not seem like the same problem. When the distortion starts, I hear it from the Omegas first and most obviously. I think there's a problem with the plate amp. Getting on the horn with PE now.

Well, it seems that I've been wrong on this. I spoke to PE and agreed to try running the sub on the line level inputs, and lo and behold, it seems to work fine that way. It means I have to split the phono stage output signal, and also (for the moment) I don't have a master volume control, but it works. I think the Super T amp was the problem. What's really strange is why everything worked great off the speaker taps for the first 3 weeks.

My apologies if I've put anyone off this sub. I'm relieved if nothing's defective, fingers crossed.

Well, part of this could all be related to the switching amplifiers. That technology is tricky, and if it's not done just right you'll get loads of problems. The fidelity is not so good, but for subwoofers, it doesn't matter. You just need current.
