People use the DSP chips sometimes for speaker crossovers and room correction purposes. They may or may not be optimal for all DSP one might want to do, good to check the datasheet to see. The ASRC in them may not be as good as some of the standalone ASRC chips can do. Overall, where audio DSP boxes usually look weak to me is in the analog stuff, ADCs, DACs, clocks, power supplies, that kind of stuff. Maybe its because doing that stuff well can get more complicated and costly.

Regarding the DSP part, there are some threads in this part of the forum for DSP chips and boards. There are also some DSP threads in the 'Digital Source' section of the forum that use PCs to run the algorithms. Might want to take a look at some of those.
