im going to make this real short and sweet
if 2 12 " dayton reference 12HO subs in 3.5 cubic feet can produce 120 db from 30hz to 100hz linearly. and it takes 8 cubic feet for an 18" dayton pro sound woofer to do the same, give me one reason why anyone would want to use an old dirty 18" sub.
it has been suggested to me that home audio subs dont have the heat disapatiobn capabilities that pro sound subs have and that sure it'll work for a period of time but after a while power compression will be too great on the home audio drivers for them to perform to spec.
can anyone shed some light on why anyone would ever use a big old dirty 18 inch pr sound driver compared to multiple high excursion home audio subs.
thanks

If this is the 18" you're talking about...

...I'd say 97db efficiency would be a good reason. That's Hoffman's Iron Law at work there, isn't it? Bigger box : greater efficiency...?

If your talking Pro sound, there are many reasons. But just keeping it simple the main reason is the super low efficency for 2x12 high excursion home subs. I doubt you can get those to do 120dB with 88dB/2.83V 4ohm. calculate amp power for 120dB SPL from 120-88 = 20log (V/2.8)
so V=118V rms then amp power into 4 ohms P=V^2/4 = 3,480 watts ie Lots O power.
