Davis Powerbeam VI PJ

Hi,

I just bought (but have not yet collected) a Davis Powerbeam VI off ebay for a very small amount of money (£10) and apparantly the lamp fires up for a second or two and then dies, I assume that the lamp has gone?

Does anyone know where in the UK you can pick up a lamp for less than the £200 I have already seen?

That said I am far more keen to modify the PJ to take either a halogen or possibly leds. Is there any advice you guys can give me?

Thanks in advance

Just thought i would pop on the forum to see if anyone had any info about the Davis Powerbeam i have just bought of ebay and saw your post!

Looks like you saw the other one and bought it!

I'm planning to retrofit the PJ with a cheaper lightsource so looks like we can help each other out on this one!

Got mine for £1.70 in the end!

when the bulb blows, its an extremley loud crack/popping noise, it can make your ears ring for quite a bit of time. I honestly dont think thats the problem with your projectors 'cause the unit wouldnt emit any lit if the lamp was bad...

the problem with mine was really akward. I took off the case, and pressed down on the right of the circuit board and it worked perfectly...
depressed and it went bad to a weird light then shut off.

So my advice is to take the cover off, and press down on various parts of the circuit board where there may be connections underneath/nonvisible.

Also, try cleaning out the fan filters because there is a sensor to turn off the unit if there isnt proper airflow.

Goodluck,
Rob.

Yeah, lets hope we can get them working! If you connect yours to a video source and turn it on, do you get any image out before it dies? As that is what mine does.

Thanks, I'll see what I can do. Which circuit board are you referring to, by the way?

Ill post some pictures of my solution...

Its alittle....crappy but it does the job and im not worried.

Thanks, please do.

TBH haven't recieved mine yet, had no way of getting to Brimingham to pick it up so I had to courier it 🙁

Should be recieving it on Wednesday so i'll let you know the problem with mine when I get it

If I can't repair it then I plan on gutting it and using it as a case for a Lilliput 7" project, should end up looking nice and commercial when it's finished!

If I can get it going, i'll use it till the bulb dies then retrofit it, don't fancy paying stupid money for a bulb that won't last half as long as a cheap one 😀

Same for me I think, though I would love to be able to mod it to take a far cheaper lamp, particularly if it were led based!!

well either way. the problem is not the bulb. it is defently a connection in the main (largest) circuit board. open it up and press down where ever while the unit is on and I can almost promise you, that is the problem.

I tried it again last night, and after fidling around with the power PCB and removing the fan filter etc I was able to make it stay on for about half a minute before it died.

I'm not certain how to actually get to the main pcb, as it is fairly well enclosed. I'll try and post some pictures tomorrow to show you.

I hope I can get this to work!!

Thanks

I do not own a davis powerbeam but this is a very common problem in projectors. 2 out of 3 have this problem....heres my solution.

like I said, this is not a davis powerbeam, it is a sharp xg-e1200u. but I'm sure the problem is similar.

BTW, I had the same problem...it would turn on for alittle bit...then just die instantly, but now all is well.

I noticed by pushing down in that area. it would work, so I unscrewed the bracket and shoved a huge washer in there. fixed it perfectly.

Hopefully should be recieving mine tomorrow, as long as the couriers are on time!

What condition was yours in when you recieved it? Was it full of dirt etc.....

First thing i'm going to do is strip it and make sure everything is clean, then I can get a look at the solder joints and make sure there are no dry joints on the boards, hopefully i'll get it going!

I'll keep your posted

I discovered my problem in the first place by getting frustrated and hitting it really hard! haha

then I was breath taken when it turned on... opened it up and...well you know...

I just cleaned out my basement room, 16'x12'....I put one of the projectors at the end and traced what seemed to make the most sense in fitting (its 4:3) so I made a wooden frame... wrapped tarp then a king size bed sheet... measured it and the screen was exactly 120"

I thought that was really strange considering thats supposably the ideal size. 🙄

that was just luck though... I can't wait 'till the projectors hanging...new carpet...install the 6.1 surround sound system... put in the 2 suade couches...😀

Goodluck with your projectors. hope your able to fix them.

It was also my plan to use the case and make my own when it didnt work, but I was estactic when I had it fixed.... saved $200+ and so much time...

Goodluck again.

Surprisingly, it was actually quite clean. It had a few missing screws etc, but other than that it wasn't too bad. Removing the outer casing is easy, but it doesn't reveal the whole board.

I'm interested to see if yours has exactly the same problem as mine!

BTW Never rely on couriers!

Goodluck again.

I guess I should start hitting the damn thing, until it works!

I already have a suround sound setup ready and waiting, but for the time being I'm gonna stick to using the wall as a screen, although I like your idea - you clearly got lucky.

I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow!

Thanks again for your help!

Finally arrived today! In quite bad condition, case is cracked in several places, screws missing and fan grills also missing - But nothing that wasn't described in the ebay ad so i'm happy!

Turned it on, fans start up, bulb follows about two seconds later, stays on for about 3 seconds and then goes off although the PJ stays on (Fans turning, controlpad lighting etc....)

I'm just about to strip it to see what I can do so i'll keep you posted!

Made some progress....

Removed the top power PCB and resoldered all the joints to make sure nothing was dry, reassembled the PJ and recieved some sparks from the main power supply situated underneath (With the black grills on it)

I'm going to remove both power supplys and take them into work to see if I can get them checked out...

I'll let you know how that goes!

Sounds pretty similar to mine. I tried to connect my ps2 to it, and for the few seconds of light i got it did display the image, and the sound continues to work once the lamp has turned off.

You might have noticed my other thread about retrofitting this PJ, i'm going to have one last go at repairing it tonight and if I have no joy then it's time to strip it!

I'll let you know if I get anywhere with it, you got any further with yours yet?

Not so far, I've been pretty busy recently. I'll let you know what happens though.
