Coming of age in the very early 90s was a fun time musically, radio stations hadn’t quite figured out the formulaic business that stole all personality and variety (well, not quite yet… it was firmly in place and soulless by the mid-90s according to my friends who were radio DJs in that era) and there was a David Sandborn track that got decent traction in the pop stations, because of the pure musicianship and fun. (“Bang Bang”, from 1991’s upfront.) I still have the CD, and though not home, streaming it now on hearing this news.

May you rest in peace, your legacy and music will be fondly remembered.

Perhaps even more than other jazz fusion musicians, Sanborn's music is still fresh and relevant. By the late 70s, Sanborn seemed to be everywhere playing with everyone. I often listen to a rotation lineup of three of his early 80s albums: Voyeur, As We Speak, and Backstreet, with Marcus Miller, et al.

There are many more albums of course, but these are played most often here and seem to transcend time.

RIP Mr. Sanborn--the music lives on.
