Damping. An old argument where big $ manufacturers aren't in tune with science

It also seems to increase distortion, probably because of lag or hysteresis in the energy transfer between the air and the padding material. So it's by no means a replacement for actual volume.

While we're on the subject, 3d printing a maze-like system of tubes could be an interesting project. Horn theory lays out the basic requirements for pipe length, expansion rates and so on, and then multiple tubes in parallel get folded together. Coding it would be an undertaking.

Long stroking subs produce a lot of distortion, and the resulting harmonics >> 100Hz might reach to the modal range of the enclosure, especially within large subs. So the rationale of stuffing sub enclosures is to damp the modal field of the harmonics, not the base frequencies....

This months RhinoZINE has a variation on this theme: CNC'd wall surfacing providing acoustic treatment in a Munich Nightclub. Rhino's generative
software, Grasshopper, was used to generate the forms.

Has been done and is done. Compared to glueing simple stripes of wood to the inside, forming a kind of matrix, expensive and uneffective. Breaking up large areas with low resonance into smaller ones with higher, is what the sub needs. I found it most effective to go down to bare wood areas of no more than 12x12cm or 5x5". Stripes should have a heihgt of about 2.5-3 times the basic woods strengt. So for a cabinet made from 20mm wood panel, 50-60mm high matrix bracing works well. You can use any kind of left over wood to make them. No need to use MDF on MDF, any combination like plywood braces on MDF is just fine. Such a matrix seems to disturb other resonances of higher frequency in a box, too. Here an example, of not finished bracing:
