dampening noise from magnet vent

Hi guys,

I've built an isobaric "clamshell" subwoofer for my car using two inexpensive "phoenix gold tantrumx 12" woofers which seemed quite good for the price. The box is vented, and I was having some port "chuffing" sounds. However, it isn't coming from the ports. The pole piece vent or magnet assembly vent or whatever at the back of the external woofer is making the noise. There was originally a rubber cover on the magnet assembly which made the noise much worse. But after removing that there is still a fair amount of noise.

So, I'm looking for ideas on how to either reduce the turbulence or velocity of the air in that vent without negatively affecting sound quality. The vent is quite smooth, I think it may just be the velocity. I considered plugging the hole with something like sponge to reduce the airflow but that might result in a burned out voice coil pretty quickly. I also experimented with putting my hand over the vent, it appears that I might be able to get away with a plate or something about a quarter inch raised from the back of the magnet assembly.

Also, does the vent design have any significant impact on the response of the driver?

Thanks
