My current DAC is a Soekris 1021, great DAC, really liked its performance, but it unfortunately died after an ESD incident.
I'm searching for another 1021 but are there alternatives that I should consider ?- other than Soekris

With a tight budget, $20 (plus shipping) to build your own might be attractive, no?

I happen to own the 1021 and Kubelik. The soekris is more 'hi-fi' sounding, bigger presentation and space but i find the Kubelik is able to the exude the emotion of vocals much better, with more warmth and punch in the music. I am not very good with words to describe what i hear, but the $20 dac simply surprised me and performed way above my expectation.
The DDDAC. You scan start small (with just one DAC board) and simple capacitor coupled output. Then add upgrades later (more DAC boards, transformer output, PSU imporovements, I2S upgrades, etc.).
