Hi, I want to build my first DAC , I don't care about performance, just for fun.
I was looking at AK4117 for spdif receiver, and I don't know how to config it, can I by PINS ( switches to select different modes ) or I need a micro controller, processor for that? .
Can it run by itself?. no MCU,
For DAC , CS4360, CS4340, PCM1680,
- Old ic's here. I know. Just wanted to build something for fun if possible.
- Cheers, Bruno.

AK4117 cannot be configured with pins but it may be able run without microcontroller using the default register settings. Check from datasheet if register default settings suit your needs.
CS8416 is a good choice. It can be configured in hardware mode without MCU control. Various mode selections can be made through pins.Hi, I want to build my first DAC , I don't care about performance, just for fun.

You can run a hardware-configured DAC with many chips. If you want something easy and fun, then go for WM8804 as SPDIF receiver and PCM5102 as DAC. Going for those old ICs will be more problems than you wish.
Oh, by the way, if you're going to design PCBs, then check out my video on DAC PCBs. It should make your life so much easier!
Awesome! I always say a working PCB that can be improved is better than a perfect PCB that was never made and assembled 🙂
AKM DACs are really good, but they are harder to implement.
Never had the opportunity to hear AD1853, so I trust you on this one!
