Since nobody else has answered, why not? Even mounted inside the computer chassis, it's basically a stand-alone module.

The dac of a PC card needs some init at power up, then in stand alone, it will be very difficult to intialize it.

I would say yes, you could probably do this, but it will be a serious pain. First off, most soundcards use an integrated chipset to handle S/PDIF encoding/decoding before sending it to the DAC. Second, most cards now have the dacs integrated into the chipset.
These chipsets are usually meant to work with drivers on a PCI bus. I think you're better off going with one of the many other DAC kits out there rather than trying to mess with a soundcard.
On the other hand, a lot of folks do use soundcards with S/PDIF outs as transports in their system. This usually goes to an external DAC. Many people report great results with this type of setup.
