Hi tiefbassuebertr,
Hi Sonusthree,
Your link is right on! Thank you for pointing the way to the correct information.
I have serviced both types of PSX-R, and the earlier one for the original amps. There is no way to determine if your PSX-R is the variable type except for the serial number. Now here is a big caution. If someone got the bottom covers mixed up, the serial number may be incorrect! At some point I may get another PSX-R in and I'll take a picture of the internals for reference. The newer PSX-R does in fact adjust it's output voltage to the needs of the unit it's plugged into. I recently had to design and create a tester that can confirm proper operation of the variable regulator.
Hi fullcircle,
I say this with all due respect to your own technician. Send that unit directly to Cyrus or your closest warranty shop for Cyrus. This fault is due to the failure of one of 24 sm transistors. If you replace the one causing trouble now, another will fail soon after in all probability.
Some of these are in the input differential circuits (4 per channel), and they need to be matched properly. Your guy doesn't want to know about this, believe me. Cyrus (and myself) will replace all of these parts in one go. It's tedious work and you have to be very careful not to damage the PCB. That is easy to do, I see it all the time when another shop has a run at it before I see it.
Now, before condemning Cyrus for this, I'll tell you it isn't their fault. The parts supply was contaminated with these transistors (more than one number). They performed well for the first number of years before we started to see these problems. I had tracked down a few to the exact transistor before anyone caught on to a problem with parts. These bad parts may last several years, and they have in your case. So there was no way to detect these in final product test. Even units I repaired and tested before delivery checked fine, even thought the faults involved other circuits. There was no way anyone could foresee this - except for the people that created these little wonders.
So, surface mount parts and lot's of them. Not a job for the average service shop, although a few should be able to handle these with no problem. Add that some parts require matching on top of this. Most shops will not match surface mount transistors, even if they agree to do so. Cyrus has had stock of real transistors for some time now. Where are the rest? Out in the market I'll bet. So another wrinkle to consider folks.
Send it to Cyrus, or me if you live in Canada. I'm the authorized warranty service place, or Europroducts in Vancouver. Derek Coates will make sure you are looked after as well. It just depends on which end of Canada you live in.
Edit: I'm using the "X" series equipment at home. Pre X and a pair of Mono X amplifiers. They are really very, very good. These amps are 150 wrms each, so they are very capable products. I also use a rebuilt Marantz 300DC for comparison. Therefore, these Cyrus products are performing at a very high level. So, I believe in the product. I'd never have bought them if I didn't. Now, for those of you who are interested, these are without feedback. There are no feedback loops, not just a loop that does not encompass the entire circuit. A totally new design for Cyrus and a real winner.
No, I don't sell anything. Just letting you all know something about a really good product. Go listen to one.

No, in this case your information is more dangerous than helpful. Please read about the fault and consider if your information will be helpful. In this case this thread could be of interest:
