What is the best method to trim speaker carpet around recessed driver holes to get a reasonably clean fit?, i was planning to glue the hole lot on with contact adhesive then cut through with a stanley knife and go around the edges of the holes reasonably carefully, but i am wondering if there is a better mathod anyone would like to share..
What if you did as you suggest, but rather than trim the holes around the edge of the driver, trim the carpet on the INSIDE of the hole. i.e the driver will overlap the carpet edges, with the carpet acting as a gasket as well. Just a thought anyway 
that might work and i will try it, however the speaker recess is actually to a very tight tolerance and i am not sure how well it will work, i will let you know how it goes
ok the trick here is to go carefully and slowly with a really sharp stanley knife, changing blades often. just cut on the downstroke and let the blade follow the edge of the mdf
The other option is to cut the recess just big enough to fit the driver and the carpet thickness. Trim the carpet just enough to 'tuck in' as the driver is fitted. Pretty much what David said, but using a conventional gasket.

yeah that method would make sense i suppose, it was too late though, i had already completely cut out the driver holes and didn't have anywhere for my circle cutting jig to pivot on.
Before spraying your contact cement put masking tape on the inside of the hole so that the carpet fibers do not stick. Then use a sharp utility knife blade and you should be fine. If you wanted to take an extra pre-caution you could use an MDF cut out hole with the same diameter as your recessed hole on top of the carpet to hold it in place while cutting the carpet.
an interesting question, i have just been brushing on the content cement so far (still got one or two speakers to go). what are the advantages of spraying it?
Fast coverage. And even coverage of complex shapes. And most contact cements want a layer of adhesive on both pieces to be joined. Spary both pieces, let set till tacky - which may be sped up with a hair dryer, press together - done.
yep, i know that bit been doing it all week 🙂, would you say spraying it uses more or less contact cement? I have a spray gun appropriate for paint etc with my compressor, would i use it with that with some thinners? What sort of thinner should i use
I don't have the space and ventilation for a spray gun and can't advise on proper mixing procedures. I have been told it works better than the aerosol can adhesive I currently use - oh well.🙄
hehe, its a bit slow, but a brush and a 4 litre tin of the stuff seems to work well enough for me, and thanks to the fact that contact is a bit gooey, there is almost no cleanup involved
