Custom Output Transformer

Hello everyone,

I have a custom CRGOSS OPT, with Kraft paper insulation and Kraft bobbin/winding former.

It sounds pretty good, however I'm wondering if it's worth waxing it?

Specifically, what will happen to the HF, and dampening. How will it sound after waxing?

Thanks 🙏

Why do you want to degrade the good OPT?
It's not PT, where improper windings may vibrate at large load, and sometimes requiring impregnation.

The designing of OPT based on -among other things- wire insulation, insulation between rows, insulation between sections etc.
If you change its with impregnation, the behaviour also will changing, usually the HF part degrading.

p.s.
If primary windings is "singing", the OPT coil structure isn't perfect. IMO impregnation would make more worse, than possible -little- noise.

The industry treatment for these types is just a quick dunk in whatever medium to seal the sides from moisture, immediately take out and leave to dry. Do no more as increased varnishing penetration through the layers will increase the undesirable dilectric constant, adding to parasitic HF losses in output transformers.
Impregnation done on mains transformers are usually soaked or vacuum impregnated right through specifically to deal with any lamination buzz and safety.
No windings should ever sing, if that is the case then the winding tensioner isn´t set up correctly. It is quite surprising that today´s F and G grade enamelled CU wires can take much more bending abuse than the earlier types which often started to flake on corners and could short out.
The early 1960 Leaks & Quads were particulary prone to this.
