Do you folks have any information on creating a custom LCD panel. I do not care about the contrast. I recall many years ago seeing articles on how to do this.

Not impossible. Only extremely difficult. There are many good reasons that you pay upwards of a hundred dollars for a panel from manufacturers that can afford it by making millions of them.
You can make LCDs. You may even make colored ones. Making a panel with modern resolution and color depth is very very difficult. Unless you spend hundreds of millions of dollars on capital equipment.

You could make your own single-pixel panel, for use as a controllable room divider or window shade. That would not be too hard. All you would need is glass with a super thin metallic coating, some of those glass spacers to keep the two sides apart a few thousandths of an inch, some LQ material, and two big sheets of polarized filter.
It would still be cheaper to buy it, though. And vertical blinds on a remote-control motor would cost 1/1000th as much.
