CSS- EL70 Mini Onken Replacement

A couple years ago I built a pair of Mini Onken's using CSS EL70 drivers. I would like to replace them with something more efficient, perhaps some Alpair 7. Would they work well without having to modify the cabinets, or is there something else that might work better?

Thanks for looking

Efficiency for those two drivers is virtually identical. It's also doubtful you can swap in a new A7.3 driver and expect the same performance. Did you build the Planet_10 box?

For a more efficient driver see the new Alpair 10p and the slightly larger 12p drivers.

As jeffie says, EL70 & A7 are very close in efficiency,

A7 uses a small box than the EL70. Mar-Kel volume is suitable for A10p or A10.3m, but (i'd have to check) i strongly suspect that the latter tune higher, so getting the right tuning is harder. There is also the issue of whether the Mar-Kel has a wide enuff baffle to support 10s.

The A10p is quite efficient, pushing the A12.2p

If your budget can stretch that far, you might want to consider the 10P - I've quite liked what I've heard from them - so far only in the FHXL, but no doubt there's a Pensil or similar MLTL design kicking around.

Even though a stand-mount BR/"Ken" or such-like would certainly be do-able, I'd be far more inclined towards a floor-stander unless constrained by the application . While I've built scores of smaller speakers, stands take up the same amount of real-estate, and buying or building a decent pair can cost more than the difference in material for the larger cabinets. but that's just me

Another fun combo is the CHBW70 / ERT26. I recently revisited the Castle Microtower design - 10 dg slanted top this time - with Dave Rosgaard's MTM crossover designed for Bob as CSS. These replaced the original pair of CMTs with EL70s that were gifted to my mom for her 80th birthday. High WAF in this case - but then that factor varies considerably.
