CRT projector problem

I found a nice crt lens and decided to make my first projector with it. Through serches I came across the PSone/CRT projector plans and decided on that.

My CRT measures 5 inches across and I have been made aware that I would subsequently have to use a 5inch or lower screen because the CRT will cut off anything that is larger than the diameter of the flat lens at the bottom and so the psone would be the monitor of choice. Today I got bored and taped a transparent ruler to the bottom because it was the only thing i had around to project on the wall. Well when I did this I noticed that the projected image was only of the numbers 1.5 to 4.5 meaning I am getting only 3 inches of image projected (VERY clearly though which makes me very happy 🙂

3 inches is the diameter of the dome lens that has raised side butted up against the flat lens. So here is what I am thinking.

1) The psone screen is about 2.5 - 3.0 in length
2) The CRT lens I have (Mark IV) is differant than what others used
3) No one has actually made one of these things (I noticed that the individual who said they had one never posted actual pics of results after he said he would) and that everyone did this on paper or theory
4) I need to remove the 3 inch dome lens (what is the proper term for this) and use a larger one or no lense at all😕

Thanks as always for the help of the noob here.

41 views and no one knows anything about this?

Reading through the crt/psone posts again the psone is said to be 5 inches so I am wondering if the Mark IV is not good for this because of the dome lens.

In the meantime I am going to try some things such as using a tube the same length without a dome lens in it and hopefully one of the more experienced guys will find this and help me, thanks.

I've played a bit with a CRT lens and I would belive that the PSONE LCD would fit. It's 5" DIAGONAL, no length or width. The rear focal lenght is only a cm or two (about an inch). I don't have a PSONE, but I am hanging onto the lense for a future science fair project for my kids.

Hope no one minds me adding more as I find out here, I do it so that others can have something show up when they search if they have the same issues.

I bought a intec controller with plans to take out the screen and use it since it is only 3 inches across but would like to get the full 5 inches that other people talk about with the CRT inlines.

Here are some pics of the housing and lens as well as the parts that I think may be limiting my viewable image to 3 inches

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

This is the convex lens with the 5" od and 3" id plastic ring that may be limiting me.

Here is a better shot of just the rings themselves

Here is the shot of the dome lens that buts up against the flat lens here again the od is 5" but the actual clear part is 3".

From the other direction.

so I am thinking if i take my dremel to the first set of rings I can knock it from 3" to 5" by grinding all the way down to the walls of the barrel. When you look through the "fish eye" lens of the bigger part through to the flat lens where you put the LCD you can see everything on the lens, the full 5", but if you reverse it and take the path the light will have when going through the LCD it seems you only get 3" and there is nothing I can do about it but am not sure I am supposed to.

So can someone more experienced such as Ace or Hillbilly help me out here, it will take about 3 days for my new screen to get here and if I can go from my 2.5 to a higher resolution 5 then that would be great. This is my first and I will be going on to a 7.5 and then 15" project but not untill this one is finished. Thanks again

OK I drew a rectangle with a 5" diagonal and put the "fish eye" part of the crt over the paper to view the subject and it gets everything but the very edges into it when I look through it. So it would do the psone pretty well it seems, but there is still the matter of the 3" of subject that is getting projected when I shine the light through it, through the crt and onto the wall

I noticed also that the non viewable part or blacked out part of the fish eyed lens is that way because of paint and not because it is opaque plastic but I figure there is a reason it is like that.

So once again, someone with more experience either through making a sucessful crt or through theory tell me if I am wrong in thinking this will not project the full image because of the fish eye lens or if I need to dremel down those rings to get the full image through the other set of lenses and onto my screen .
