CRT computer monitor enlargement

Hello all,
I've just today found this site after reading about the DIY projectors in a gaming forum I frequent. I've been looking into XGA and UXGA projectors for the last couple of months. All I can say is they must be gold plated for the prices their asking for them.
I have a 19" Sony Trinitron flatscreen CRT monitor that has a max resolution of 1600x1200x32 and that's the resolution I like to play my games at with 4xFSAA on. I would like a larger picture and don't have the $ to throw at something that will allow me to maintain the picture quality I'm accustomed to. As my wife and I share a home office there is considerable light in the room so I don't think a DIY projector using my monitor will work, will it?
I remember seeing what I guess was a Fresnel lens on a T.V. show that was at least 30" wide in a 4:3 format. Is it possible to find a lens of that size and would it be very expensive? Would it be possible/plausable to fabricate a housing between such a lens and my monitor to block ambient light as well limit the view to only the monitor screen and have the monitor view fill the area of the lens? Could I watch such a setup directly?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post. I'm hoping you folks have really good news for me 😀
TIA
John
