I have an 8001, that powers up, no problem, barely passes audio, but the audio it does pass, is distorted, and sounds crunchy.. I have been looking for service manuals. would you guys have any tips, or places to look?
Thanks,
Mike
Thanks,

I found the schematic and owners manual. Thanks for the link as well. but I have no idea on how to troubleshoot this. Dont even know where to start.

Look for the crest pro series maintenance/service manuals. But you need some basic labtools and a biiiig power resistor bank etc.....

Mike, frankly, the 8001 is not an amp to start learning to troubleshoot with. It has high rails and plenty of capacitance, thus if it goes bang, will do a lot of damage to itself and possibly kill you.
However, saying that, and IIRC, the main service problems with these amps were input connectors and gain pots. You can replace both of these with a little careful disassembly and half decent soldering skills. Just make sure you take lots of pictures before and whilst you take it apart so you can put it back the same way it started. 😉
Like already said.
These amps have problems with connectors etc....
Just check al the connectors. They are not that young anymore also.....
Be aware that voltages are very high and the power supply capacitors can start to leak and go boom....
Don't forget that many of those amps where used and abused on sub-woofer duty in PA applications so lots of heat etc.....
We have a few 10004's (2 8001's in one) and when checking the power supply caps. All of them are leaking. Still working but they need to be replaced.
When testing on full power we had a capacitor that said poof.
They are beefy amps that can supply a lot of current. power output @ 8 ohm is not that high but even using 2ohm it keeps going.
They are build to handle heavy loads.
