I am currently designing an iphone/ipod sound system for my final year project at university.
I have little to no audio knowledge so was wondering if I could get some advice on a few aspects of my project.
The idea behind my system is that it is to create a user experience were no matter what angle the user is to the system they will have the same experience from interacting with the interface to hearing the music. The system also includes a unique feature of sharing music between friend's iphones/ipods. The system would ideally be used on a coffee table or at a breakfast bar for example, where users will all be facing a different direction to it.
The system unit size is expected to be 330mm in diameter and 100mm in height (approx.)
Please excuse my audio knowledge naivety!
My original thoughts were to have a downward firing 10.5cm sub with a bass reflex and five 3cm speakers orbiting the sub in the same unit.
Is this sensible and what do i need to take into account?
How hard or important is it to calculate the enclosure volume and port size for the sub? only needs to an approximation.
Any thoughts on the audio side would be greatly appreciated, open to any other audio design solutions too!

I would make the thing mono, and use 3 full range drivers orbiting, as big as possible and not use the sub (4"sub isnt going to do anything).
Dayton ND90-8 3-1/2" Aluminum Cone Full-Range Driver 8 Ohm
You can make a stereo to mono adapter pretty easy with jsut a few resistors. The thing is very small anyway, so mono would be best since you wont be able to hear 2 points that are less then 200mm away from each other.
Im not sure which country you are in so i cant recommend much.

Vettel, I've had similar thoughts in the past. However, it never got farther then a simple concept for me at the time due to so many more questions being asked than answered in my mind. So good luck.
My vision similarly had a down-fireing bass driver but, had an up-firing driver too. This would perform a somewhat compromised full range job distributed by an inverted cone above the driver to radiate 360 laterally.
Harman Kardon did a good jelly-fish type sub around the time of the original iMacs that may be worth a closet look. Believe they have more recently released a smaller version under the JBL brand without the same height and vertical port.
This as you may discover raises so many possibilities and problems. Quite intresting as a Uni. project with plenty to write about.
However, this as you may soon appreciate, is a massive compromise in so many areas. From which you may find is where the love for audio may grow uncontrolably...

quality wise i would like to match or top the jbl creature speakers. How would your solution compare? The JBLs is what i used to base my original idea on, am i being optimistic thinking i can match them?

The jelly fish-esque speakers is what i currently own now, the harmon kardon soundsticks which i love, not only for design but for quality. I would really like to try and emulate the quality of these but understand that this maybe optimistic. The upwards firing driver facing an inverted cone is an option but one i would rather no take due to styling issues.
So far its a love/hate relationship!

With the set up you recommended would it be ok to angle the speakers say 60º downwards, just thinking due to space in the enclosure. would i also need a bass reflex or have it just sealed?
