This seems like it would be a lot cheaper and easier than making one from scratch. Would it be hard to change the light source of a commercial projector? I was thinking maybe a 250w HQI.
yes
Yes, you could do this. If you do a poor job, then the projector parts will melt. If you do a good job, then you would have a great projector at very low cost, and also with low recurrent costs.

well I have 2 sharp xg-e1200u's and each one have sensors everywhere to make sure there is the right peices wherever. On the other hand...these sensors can be fooled with ID cards...paper clips...anything, really. My projector lamps are 370w so I would love to find a 370w bulb that would fit in there, because then I could spend < $50 to replace the bulb when the Lamps cost $465...
anyone have a link to a small 370w bulb? (3" long at the most)

Thanks a lot. I'm gonna build my own 15" projector and my goal is to have it done by the SuperBowl. I just bought a 400w magnetic ballast on eBay, theres a thread about it in the lighting section. Grotke said it was good so I picked one up. It was only like 30 bucks+shipping.
