Haha, didn't mean to be facetious, just making sure.
After thinking about it, maybe your fresnel is upside down, because my lamp certainly does not have to be at the bottom of the case to work. Just a thought. Might just be a bad mirror though.

Thanks for the help, I'll flip it, see what happenes, then buy a new mirror (where? home depot cut to size im' guessing.).
The problem with getting a normal mirror at home depot or somewhere is the reflective part is behind the glass, so there may appear to be a "ghosting" when projected. So if you do go that route try to get the thinnest you can as that will have the least glass, or just get a frontside mirror which is preferable.
DYS 600W bulb
I have just come across one of these projectors as well. Mine is a Dalite Portascribe. I, too, was suprized when I looked up the lumen rating on the bulb. I have some A.V. connections, so I have used my panel with a couple of different OHP's. One was an Elmo - ???? (can't remember the model no. which used a 82v 410W FXL bulb. And the other was a 3M with a 500W - ??? bulb. Both Halogen, and both had similar, likeable results in a dark room.
My panel is a 3M 6100 (640 x 480 [800 x 600 compressed], 16.7M colour, 30ms reponse)
I'm just using it for the Xbox, and movies. My only complaint is the colour temp. out of OHP halogen bulbs. The DYS bulb has the same 3200k colour temp of all the other OHP bulbs. This becomes very obvious when you watch a movie without a lot of colour contrast like The Matrix.
The only thing that keeps me from building a HID light source behind my panel is the fact that I am challenged for storage space, and projection throw distance. This, coupled with the fact that my wife doesn't even like the look of a shiny new T.V. in the living room, keeps my home theatre dreams held at bay.
I thought that I would try to build a silver screen to try to get some more gain out my setup, but if anyone in this post has ideas on how to get truer colour out of a 3200k light source, I'd love to hear from you!

I am having this problem as well, the darks are to dark and the lights are to lights, but not enough color, it's kind of been a pain in the butt. In some movies, it's extremly dark when it shouldn't be, I'm going to try and find a way to make this setup work however. I don't have the money right now to get or build a new better light source.
Have you posted any results? I haven't had a chance to test my setup. Hopefully, I'll get it setup tonight. If I get a pic, I'll put it up in this post.
Someone should contact the person that uses the nView Spectra C + Apollo A1-1000 in the pic in the "show your results" thread, he's mentioned with his setup on the first page.
I don't know if he's had the same problem though.
The bright spot in the middle IS from the little reflector at the bottom of the bulb, I'm guessing because I have it set so low.
I'm still trying to get good color. I thought it was a lack of contrast, but that isn't the case. In some 3-D games, it becomes so unbearbly dark you can't make out anything, and to make up for it, I have to sometimes turn the birghtness up so high to see the details it's very annoying. I'm throwing from 12 ft, or less I think. In a snowboarding game, the caves where to dark, then you get out into the snow and your image is pure white with no details in the snow....
Ah well, I like tweaking everything, just keep the posts coming! Maybe we can help anyone else that is using a DYS setup.

No luck flipping the fresnel Tritoch?
I personally haven't noticed any bright spot in my image, although I'm waiting on new fresnels, so any extra brightness in the image might be cut out by the white film that has proven impossible to remove from the lower fresnel.
Might also be that I split the fresnel. That may help with the bright spot. I went around with a tiny flat head screw driver and a hammer carefully breaking away the sides bit by bit, but I'd suggest just cutting off the glued part on the edge if your gonna try it as doing it my way left a lot to be desired. (It did work, but left sharp edges, a few minor cracks here and there etc.)

Ok, here are some (not so good) pics I took with a borrowed digital camara. It's a *little* brighter then the pictures, but not by much, I would like it MUCH brighter, but I still haven't gotton a replacment mirror, and I need to just check to see if the fraynel is flipped, someone said it wasen't, but I might as well try (would this explain it only being out of focus on the top?) since the bulb has to be at the bottom to project a good image, which is annoying since the reflector at the bottom makes a birght spot in the screen.
This is the setup, or rather, what it looked like before we put a legnth of white PVC on the bottom to straiten the wrinkles out and to make it easy to roll up to the ceiling while not in use.
Here is the projected image from a paused anime.
Here is my 4ft 11in wife showing the size of the image.
And here is a shot of the OHP I am using. (And my retarded dog.)
thats about it, look a little dark to you guys? I'm using blackoutcloth, but it still doesn't look to bright. Maybe I missed a layer of something when I was cleaning it out when I got it (it had a THICK film of dirt on the top, and maybe I missed something underneath, even though I was sure I got everything.)

It does look a bit dark. But that all depends on how far away the projector is and how big the image is. Did you play with the settings on the actual lcd at all? Also light leakage cuts down on the perceived image quality a lot, as eyes (and cameras) will compensate for the extra light.
I would definitely try flipping the fresnel, its no big deal, just lift the plastic top frame, pull out the clip and flip it. If it is in fact upside-down that may help with brightness, not sure though.
Looks really good though coming out of an Apollo AI-1000 with only a singlet lens.

Man your quick! It's around 12ft or so away, but it does look darker in the pictures. I'll give it a flip around in a few, see what happens. I did play with the settings on the LCD, nothing improves the contrast problem with the colors, but it might just be a weakness in this setup. It's really ok with me, but if it could look better, then I should try. I remember looking at other peoples setups, and they looked alot brighter, so after a cleaning, and a flip of the fraynel(see if it helps), it might look alot better, if not, thats fine to. Thanks for (quick!) replys.
I flipped the lens, and did not fix my blurring problem, which I still can't figure out.
But it DID make my blurry image TEN times sharper, so it must have been flipped the other way around? In some of my 2-D fighting games, it looks like I can see lines in certian parts, but I think that might have been there all along, with the blur hiding it. In anycase, I'll take the sharpness over the blurry anyday!
Looks alot better, and little brighter, but I still haven't fixed the light leakage on this baby, so thats going to help alot to.

Someone said something about the color index not being that good using these types of OHP's, and was wondering....
would a lexan UV filter help, or worsen the problem? Doesn't it improve your color index? And I would think that these things would be shooting out tons of UV's.....

I put a piece of Lexan XL from Home Depot ($5) in below the fresnels. Don't know how much UV comes out of these, but figured it would be worth the extra layer of heat protection. I don't know that much about optics but I think the only thing it would improve would be to cut down on UV, not the color index.
As far as halogen bulbs go, they are supposedly very yellow in color compared to a metal halide or some other types of bulbs.

Ok, I'm an idiot....
Anyway, my old Apollo AI-1000 has a small turning knob on the side of it, I look inside, and nothing is connected to the knob, it's just turning in the inside with nothing on it. All my OHP has is the light bulb, it's small reflector, and the wiring, but at the top left of it, looking towards the reflection, there is a orange knob, that doesn't turn anything....
Whats supposed to be there? I don't see anything in this pic either
The inside of this apollo A1-1000 looks just like the inside of mine, except mine has orange wiring instead of the blue.

Any chance you could put up a pic of the orange knob your talking about? The only one I know of that is any use is the one on the lens to adjust it. There are 4 other ones that were attached to the side of mine on little brackets, I believe so that one could roll film or some other long sheet across, but I'm not sure.
I think your right! (about the knob).
Now, I just posted in a thread about someone who wants more light from a 600watt bulb setup. And I was wondering, to make it brighter, and get the best use of the light these OHP's make, why not make some sort of custom reflector? My OHP has a little reflector, are their any ideas on how to get all the wasted light to go up?
something like aluminum wrap all around the bottom? I have no idea.
I'm guessing anything that would not reflect the light evenly would look messy and terrible, and I don't know what kind of stuff I could use.
That is, if it would even help the light output in the first place.
Bah, just wondering.
EDIT: I just noticed my reflector is rather old and dull looking. Wonder if I got a new reflector how much it would improve the light output.

a condensor lens might help

i'd polish it first
You just posted in another thread that these bulbs really only have an output of 2000/3000 lumens, which makes sense, as it's not as bright as some of the setups I've seen.
I guess I now have to go the expensive metal halide route I was trying to avoid. 160 bucks for a cheap MH setup for a rig that cost 80 bucks.
Oh well. Guess I'll be doing that next year when I have the funds.

Looking for pictures/scematics for the Apollo A1-1000
Hey, i was wondering if you had had any more pictures of the projectors guts or have any drawn scematics, as I took mine appart to put in another case and ended up with one extra wire.
Thanks for your help,
Tyler (about-blank@houston.rr.com)
