Has anybody considered converting a A/V receiver to digital outputs?
For example take a Denon AVR3808 or AVR3310 and peel out the digital stream before it hits the internal dacs.
Does this sound plausible? Has anybody attempted it?

This is exactly what I want to do. I use Behringer DCX2496 processors after the receiver and would like to eliminate the unnecessary D/A-A/D stages. There is a S/PDIF out on my Yamaha receiver, but I believe it doesn't pass through the DSP, so there is no bass management.

I was hoping to retain all the bass management and audyssey EQ by stealing the digital signal from the internal DACs. I will be picking up an AVR-3310 in the next few days so I will have a look inside. I was hoping this wouldn't be a pioneering effort.

Can you post a picture of the DACs on the Denon?
I fear that it's a 6-8channel device in a BGA package and the DAC I2S lines aren't fully exposed. Is Denon good at sharing schematics with customers?
