Converting B&W 685 S2 to active - the crossover was pretty 'basic'!

Bit of an update. Have now built and tested the electronics. LR crossover at 2.5kHz and integrated into a preamp to offer volume control, and input switching. All checks out nicely in terms of correct crossover frequency, low noise etc. Have done a first listening test feeding the crossover into two Cambridge Audio A3i amps and matching the levels on these. Results so far are very favourable. My only real 'test' is to play some vocal tracks that I am familiar with. I would say the new active implementation definitely (to my ears at least) offers an improvement. Voices sound more realistic - getting closer to the illusion of the vocalist being in the room. Not trusting just my own (presumably 'confirmation biased' hearing), I asked a friend to just comment on how the setup now sounds and he was impressed. @AllenB - I did do the tweeter reverse polarity check and in every sense of the word the sound sucked.

Is it still bad?

That's the first step of a long journey. What do you think about measuring so you can compare plots, and see how far from LR they are? Have you also tried adjusting the tone?
Sorry if I was not clear. With the tweeters connected in phase with woofers they sound good (well very good to my ears). If I reverse phase the tweeters the degradation is obvious. So I take this as some subjective empirical evidence that things are right with the drivers in phase. @AllenB I am indeed going to sort out some measurements next. Not sure what tech I need to do this at the moment but will investigate.

Thought I would update and provide feedback. I completed the project. I did do some measurements and found that I had a pretty flat response over the crossover region (using a 2.5kHz crossover frequency). I then did some extended listening tests and went back to the passive setup and listened again. So the verdict? Really very little difference between the two setups that I could discern! The active setup maybe marginally 'clearer' on female vocals. But maybe I was seeking positive affirmation. Against that the active setup adds a lot of complexity and would require some further work to ensure that noise is not added (I think I would implement a 4 way volume control to attenuate all the outputs from the active preamp). So after all that - I am going back to the original passive setup. Good fun learning project though!
