Yes, you really need both - my daughter currently has:

Encore P-Bass copy (with the action set VERY high)
Vintage 5 string (main instrument)
Ozark four string acoustic
Vintage 4 string fretless

Incidently 'sreten', I see you're in Brighton, Melissa when to BIMM (Brighton Institute of Modern Music) last summer and attended 'heavy metal bass school'. She had a really great time, and made some good friends.

you're welcome. But I do agree though, you should probably have both, because there are some styles of music that just play better on a fretted. To answer your question though, if you do decide to go fretless wenge wood is great for it, it's very hard and will wear very well (as in not much at all).

i m still afraidin to do it ,
the jumped out fret was fuked up by one of my friends 🙁 ! , he was repairin some guitars while ago ,changing their frets , etc ... and he did them so well , so i made a BIG BIG BIG mistake and took my bass to him to help me put the fret back !
, he start his work ! .......

Im very sorry about your setback...

i know thiss is off topic but I never let anyone mess with my axe unless i see they have the tools and have some credintials...

although... im not afraid to remove my pickguard and totally rewire my stuff... cuz i know about electronics... but carpentry and luthery (spell?) arnt my strong points...

i agree that you should carefully pop out that fret and bend and reseat it... it may work well enough to suprise you or it may not work at all but like he said take your time... and a little advise from guns & roses: Patience

Well, here's my two cents.
I wanted to try playing fretless a few years back so I filed all the frets down ( taking much care not to touch the wood) and left just the part of the fret thats glued in. Then, I finished the job with wet/dry sand paper. The result is a cool fretless neck with narrow silver lines, looks just like the lined fretless necks from Warmoth. Plays very well.

hi all !!!! ... I DID IT !!!!!!!
and u wont believe ... i didn t chip the fingerboard !!!!
lol , i didn t fill the holes yet , but i test it and its completly prefect , just need abit adjustin , it s buzzin on 1st string around fret 9 to 12 ...
but except that , the sound is prefect , the neck is prefect ...
but I HELL NEED A FRETED BASS NOW 🙁 ...
