Hello all
If a ported box were to be built to size restrictions. E.g. 18L with 34hz tune. Can one such box be used to evaluate a number of different drivers?

Greets!
I guess if all have similar Fs (+/- 10%) and the box is tuned ~ to it. FWIW, historically a sealed box was used.

If I allow a lil extra volume and use measured fill material like sinkers, would then by adjusting for driver displacement and always keeping a net 18L allow for a fixed 34hz tuned port? I am interested in hearing how three different 8 inch drivers sound in this volume and at that tuning without building dedicated boxes. I might have enough more variety to test in that box such as a 10 that I have
You're welcome!
Yes, a BR is just a Helmholtz resonator, so its design has nothing to do with the driver.

Thank you for confirming that. RegardsYou're welcome!

I'm not totally clear on what the goal is or how different the drivers are, but it seems worth mentioning that the driver and enclosure/port interact and the normal process is to optimize the enclosure volume and tuning/enclosure resonance frequency (Fb) based on the driver's parameters.
If you have a set enclosure volume and Fb, in the bass range (near resonance) you may primarily show which driver is closest to needing that particular alignment. That doesn't necessarily show the best performance each different driver can deliver though, unless the different drivers have similar specifications or you're not using them near the tuning frequency.

Goals and limitations
Max available is 18L+lead adjustment=20L fill cavity in a sculpture. Port is external firing. That's the limits
The goal is to find the best sounding driver from a bunch of 8"s and 10"s for this enclosure. In sims, all the drivers from this pool can nail 30hz at 0 and f3 well under 30hz in this enclosure. Now I would like to see if they can sound good doing it and which sounds best
Normal process?
I am not having a go at anyone or anything that anyone said. What is normal process? Does it not include auditioning the driver choices for sound too?
Reading back in these pages, I can see that half believe that the box and port are a unit while the other half think that the driver and port are the unit
All I can see that the normal process is, someone wants to build a speaker and has some idea of sound style they after, so choose one driver from either what someone else built or what seems likely in a catalogue. Then run the driver through sims and if the driver looks promising and has some following, then build it up in the mind until that driver becomes god. Then build another "box". There are very very few threads that about finding the sound and I have ever only seen one person actually really finds that the eyes are major senses and should be addressed too. I see this as bad process and am actually interested in finding the difference in sound amongst the driver choices

Normal process = start with driver parameters. Use software or equations to tell you what the optimal box size and tuning frequency are for that driver. Make adjustments if required.
You've now provided much more information about what you are doing and it makes sense. In your original post it sounded like you were just chucking random drivers into a box of X size tuned to Y frequency. As an analogy, it felt similar to asking if everyone in the world can wear US size 37 shoes. Sure they can, but only the world record holder is probably going to like it.
We can only work with the information that's provided.
