Connecting WM8804 SPDIF to I2S convertor to miniDSP

Hi friends

I want to connect the board in the attachment picture to my minidsp through I2S.
(http://www.minidsp.com/images/documents/Product Brief-MiniDSP.pdf)

The connection will be like this:
Soundcard SPDIF output>WM8804 SPDIF input - WM8804 I2S output>miniDSP I2S input.

So which I2S channel will I use on miniDSP, I will use minidsp as MCLK also.

miniDSP has lots of I2S data input channels like 1&2, 3&4 etc. (please look at the manual: http://www.minidsp.com/images/documents/Product Brief-MiniDSP.pdf) which channels do I need to use?

and do I have to use +5V_IN on the WM8804 board?

😕

Thanks

You'll run into a clocking issue when you do as intendet :worried:

miniDSP runs on a fixed samplerate of 48kHz while I2S output of 8804 will depend on the sound file that is played back. You'll need an asynchronous sample rate converter inbetween.

Easiest is to use the miniDIGI which will provide SPDIF inputs and will care for samplerate conversion 😉

hi curryman

thanks for your answer, I have an external clock having multiple clock outputs(24578 Mhz and coeffcients) (Audio-gd JZ-1) that connected to soundcard and minidsp.

can this clock help me for this problem?

thanks

hi again curryman
I now understand your concern, I can use fixed 48kHz sample rate output from xonar essence STX sound card settings. can this fix the problem?
regards
If you can fix the samplerate to 48kHz this might work. YOu'll have to try out different slave mode/master mode configurations (e.g. miniDSP master, WM8804 slave or vice versa).

However if resampling is done from windows sound kernel in this case it will be of really bad quality :-( Best and easiest solution is still external ASRC (miniDIGI)😉

kind regards, Daniel
