I'll be back on here later today. I have to go to sleep. Thank you both for the insight and recommendations. I'm guessing those links above are the best European deoxit products out there? I clicked on both links, and I don't think I want to pay shipping. I'm a Yank, and I'm damn sure there's stuff I can find online here. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not as good as the European product!
I don't know what Altec was doing with their solid state designs at that time (I'd have to see the service manual), but the output devices may well be Germanium. My first amplifier was an Electro-Voice 1144, and it was a very minimalistic setup with a 2-transistor RIAA/tape preamp, and a 3-transistor output stage with a class A input driving a transformer, which in turn drove the 2 output Ge transistors with a pair of secondary windings. I've seen Delco advertisements using the same setup with a pair of their monster Ge devices for around 60W output power. As could be expected with a minimalistic setup like that, THD hovered around 1%.. Pop the top and look for a transformer near the output devices.
